The Scale of Japan's Devastation

Facts are hard to come as many news outlets sensationalize the tragedy in Japan. But this AP report sums up the situation with just the facts. Since 1900, there have only been four other earthquakes stronger than Japan's 8.9; The official death toll is 1,900, but as many as 10,000 could be dead; 180,000 have been evacuated from nearby the nuclear power plant:

Nowhere near Chernobyl-like conditions. If there were a significant release of radiation in Japan, it wouldn't pose a significant danger to West Coast of the U.S. Many people are calling for the shutdown of U.S. nuclear power plants. Our 104 plants provide 20% of our electricity.
